Named after Mario Ruiz’s initials, the MR Chair re-visits a classic design – the plastic shell chair.
The chair explores the idea of timelessness, inviting feelings of nostalgia for a design that we all know and love. The design, defined by its materiality, looks just as much to the past as it does to the future, with its complex casting methods and innovative mineral filled form.
Crafted with care and intuition, MR Chair is well suited to break out areas, as well as training and meeting rooms within the workplace. For the home, it is a stylish addition to living, dining, working and outdoor spaces. The generous shell seat and diverse range of bases enable freedom of choice with myriad material and colour possibilities.
Mario Ruiz has a 20-year product design career that spans furniture, technology, lighting, office and applied graphics. His skill and multidisciplinary experience has seen him collaborate with over 120 companies worldwide and be acknowledged with more than 40 awards in Europe and the United States.
In 2011, a mutual friend introduced Mario to Peter Schiavello. With a penchant for talented designers, Peter commissioned Mario to design a collection of products, one of which was MR Chair. Mario describes: “Schiavello’s modernist approach provided the launchpad to imagine a chair for twenty first century working and living.”
It was to be Schiavello’s first plastic moulded chair. With a flat and open-seated design, it was extremely difficult to ensure MR Chair remained true to Mario’s design as well as maintain strength, stability and flex. Design Director Anton Schiavello explains, “MR Chair’s plastic shell is made from glass fibre-filled plastic, which is stronger and more durable then normal plastics. The mixture took three years for the Schiavello Design Studio to develop, with trial and error during testing of materials to obtain the right amount of stability and flex in the seat back. Working with a laboratory allowed us to adjust the mineral levels and create an uncompromised mixture that achieved the strength and quality desired.” Now, the finished design includes 7% glass fibre, which not only makes the chair strong, but also provides a one of a kind texture and innovative composition.
