A reflection of history

Serving as Surf Life Saving Australia's ‘Surf House’, Schiavello Construction carried out the fitout of the ODCM designed office and function venue. A functional, flexible and coastal-inspired environment, it reflects both the history and contemporary character of SLSA.

The interior is infused with yellow and red symbolism and is based on a ‘swim between the flags’ concept. Interface carpet references ‘shifting sands’ while black exposed ceilings draw attention to the lightness of new finishes such as highly detailed plywood and recycled timber joinery. A contemporary take on historical graphic imagery also replaces the need for a conventional museum.

A seven day a week operation

Glazed walls maximise the 590m2 space in addition to fabric operable walls which enhance flexibility and allow the boardroom and training room to combine for functions. Project activity also entailed construction of a kitchen, restrooms and coordination of essential services.

A highly public area that operates seven days a week, flexibility and communication were key to executing works. Detailed documentation and surveying carried out by Schiavello Construction ensured any necessary changes maintained the design integrity. This also achieved a reduction in demolition works and allowed new services to be successfully installed within the existing, older structure.
