Barry’s Bootcamp has Melbourne ready to burn

Barry's Bootcamp Australia's long-awaited entrance into Melbourne is finally here. Located in South Yarra's Como Centre, the global fitness empire is already achieving cult-like status amongst Melbourne's fitness-obsessed.

In continuing Schiavello Construction’s management of the APAC rollout, Barry’s Como Centre was designed in partnership with PTID and Aston Consulting. The South Yarra studio reflects the authentic Barry’s brand and subtly nods to its locale’s urban nature with concrete textures, modern amenities, and beaming neon signage. The studio also caters for pre-workout activewear retail therapy, and post-workout protein shakes at the Fuel Bar.

Leveraging our Sydney team’s expertise

As the first Melbourne studio and the fifth instalment in the APAC rollout, our Melbourne-based team leveraged our Sydney team's expertise to bring the Barry's experience to life.

This expertise came in handy with the construction of the Red Room. Built to withstand the high-intensity activity and nightclub volume music within, the Red Room's acoustic properties had to ensure no disruptions to neighbouring tenants.

In collaboration with Aston Consulting and structural engineer David Novak & Associates, the Red Room was to reflect the previously engineered floating box, supported by springs sandwiched between the raised concrete slabs supporting the room.  This ultimately ensures that sound reverberation from loud music, dropped weights, and moving patrons does not transfer beyond the Red Room’s closed doors.

“The structural acoustic spring floor was also required to hold the load of gym equipment and maximum participants while not exceeding the maximum capacity of the slab. We achieved this by replacing the concrete slab on springs with layers of fibre cement sheet on springs, which significantly reduced the dead load of the box while maintaining its structural integrity,” explains Project Administrator, Tim Radin.

Working within a live environment

Given the studio's location within the bustling Como Centre precinct, strict coordination with building management was paramount to patrons and tenants' comfort throughout construction. In preparation for all noisy works, we provided building management and tenants with detailed schedules to ensure all parties were aware of upcoming works – leaving no room for surprises.

As with most projects under construction in 2020, the looming reality of COVID-19 hindered productivity on-site. Despite this, however, our team pushed through the challenges and successfully delivered the project on time.
